This role sits within a wider Enterprise Cloud Services (ECS) team that is transforming and expanding to enhance its HMRC Cloud Centre of Excellence offering. It is a diverse team of around 80+ individuals, creating a dynamic and inclusive working environment, covering Cloud Service Design, Development, Operation and Governance.

Job description

As a Test Engineer within HMRC’s Cloud Centre of Excellence you will be responsible for analysing, test designing (automated & manual), and test executing HMRC’s next generation Cloud platforms and Products. The Test Engineer is responsible for ensuring that developed products and services meet their requirements.

You will work within a close-knit team which follows Agile principles in order to enable the latest Cloud services for our customers in a secure, standardised, and assured fashion. Currently this is achieved through the use of technologies such as AWS, Azure, Hashicorp Vault, Terraform, Ansible, Gitlab, CloudFormation and Serverless functions written using Golang and Python.

This role reports to the Test Lead and is predominantly focussed on the development and maintenance of test automation framework.

Ideal Candidate:

This role will suit an individual who has experience in working with programming languages - particularly in cloud-based environments.

As the ideal candidate, you will:

  • Have experience working with Cloud environments, particularly able to design and execute test cases using standard testing techniques.
  • You will be able to build skills across a breadth of knowledge as part of your personal development in order to match the industry’s own evolution.
  • You will have knowledge of working in an enterprise environment developing cloud services within a regulated setting.
  • You are able to run and manage appropriate tests to ensure that requirements have been fully met and be able to communicate defects or trends clearly to Software Developers, outlining how defects are identified and the possible causes.
  • You are able to design and execute non-functional test cases using standard testing techniques, in instructed environments

Essential Criteria:

You will have knowledge, experience and understanding of:

  • Experience of infrastructure testing and cloud technologies in particular
  • Ability to author and maintain test automation scripts
  • An excellent awareness of testing life cycle & defect life cycle in Agile practices.

Desirable Criteria:

You will have knowledge and experience of:

  • Demonstrable ability to independently investigate, research and resolve issues
  • Programming skills with Selenium WebDriver/Terratest/ InSpec/ Go/ Python etc
  • Understanding or some exposure to automation frameworks
  • Experience with Linux and Windows
  • Experience with version control e.g. Git / GitLab
  • Experience in identifying and reporting testing risks & issues to the stakeholders
  • ISTQB Certified

This role will require travel to other office locations.

Responsibilities

As a Test Engineer, you will be:

  • testing Cloud Infrastructure developed in AWS and Azure
  • analysing user stories for validity and feasibility
  • executing all levels of testing (Component, System, Integration etc)
  • designing and developing test cases, plans and automation scripts
  • detecting and tracking software defects and inconsistencies
  • demonstrating and applying good practices throughout testing activities
  • providing support to other team members
  • providing an active input into the technical documentation/ operation guide
  • working closely with developers/engineers to reach a common understanding of the code base and test coverage at unit level

Team members that are moving offices as a result of the Locations Programme will be entitled to a Moves Adjustment Payment for three years where they incur additional costs. This is calculated based on the difference between the costs of travelling to and from the new and old office, over a weekly period. Terms and Conditions
