You will be working within the department Digital & Information Technology (D&IT). The department is responsible for realising (new) digital products and the digital ambitions of the Port of Rotterdam (PoR). The teams within the department work together with colleagues, clients and stakeholders to create value through innovative ways of working and launching digital services.

We, the Data Technologies & Innovation Services (DTIS) team, are a self-organising and mostly autonomous team, full of energy and humour. We have an important mission: To provide PoR organization the data technology, -analytics & -innovation capability at the professional level that suits the Data Driven Organisations ambitions and that’s fitting the claim to be the “Smartest Port” in the world! We collect data from every nook and cranny in the port and make the data available for business intelligence and data science purposes. We collaborate with data scientists and product teams in the Port of Rotterdam itself and for the port ecosystem. We have a user-driven approach, work agile/scrum following Secure Dev/Ops principles and are continuously improving our SRE way of working.

The team is building a variety of data products using a standardised, self-developed data platform in Azure. This platform consists of a variety of tooling, with a focus on open source. Tooling we work with include Kubernetes, dbt, Argo Workflows & Argo CD, Spark, Azure Data lake storage, Databricks, Synapse, Spring and Power BI. The team has a solid and widespread base in Data Engineering and we, among others, work on:
  • Ingestion of data sources,
  • Developing new (streaming) data solutions and add features to existing services,
  • Build and maintain containerised workflows,
  • Support data analysts/data scientists,
  • Build data marts in the data warehouse,
  • Set up and maintain cloud infrastructure using infrastructure as code (Terraform),
  • Operations using Prometheus, Grafana, Slack.

Wat vragen wij van jou?

To strengthen our DevOps team, we are looking for a Data Engineer that has some experience and is looking to continue to grow in this area of expertise. What do we need from you?
  • At least 1 years of demonstrable experience as a data engineer,
  • At least 1 years of experience programming in Java/Kotlin, Golang or Python,
  • Experience with SQL,
  • Experience with Spark is a pre,
  • Experience in designing and building data ingest, processing and storage solutions,
  • Comfortable to communicate in English
  • Experience in developing in a cloud platform, Azure is a pre,
  • Experience with (Docker) containers is a pre,
  • Knowledge and experience with Agile/scrum teams is a pre,
  • Experience infrastructure as code (espacially Terraform) is a pre
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes, containerised workflows and microservices is a pre,
  • Experience with Site Reliability Engineering is a pre,
  • Experience with or knowledge of Datawarehouse concepts and data modelling (starscheme etc) is a pre
  • Experience with AIS and ship position data is a pre,
  • Affinity with logistic chains and/or nautical services is a pre.

With regards to the soft and social skills:
  • You are aware of security & privacy when working with data,
  • You naturally immerse yourself in new technological developments, you have the drive to continuously implement improvements and you think in terms of 'business value',
  • At the same time “ownership is your middle name”,
  • You know how to inspire with your “think big act small”, “make-it-happen” mentality.

Wat bieden we jou?

  • The starting salary depends on education and experience and amounts to a maximum of € 3.703,- gross per month (with the option to grow to the end of the scale via the annual assessment of € 4.629,-).
  • 36 hour work week
  • An annual contract with a view to a permanent appointment
  • Good pension scheme with the ABP (average pay system, in which about 70% of the premium is reimbursed by us)
  • Travel allowance for car or public transport
  • Thirteenth month and holiday pay, built up via a personal choice budget of 19.6%. You can use this budget in several ways, extensive choice of training and education, so that you can develop further.
